About the Fundraiser

This fundraising campaign seeks to establish a memorial scholarship in Mr. Barber's name for a graduating student from Myers Park High School. The scholarship will be awarded based on the candidate's artistic endeavors, overall academic achievement and commitment to public service. We are awarding the first Scholarship this Spring for the 2009-2010 school year, and applications are now available. Please contact us for more information.

Purpose of Fundraiser

To commemorate Dean Barber's years of teaching, several graduates are organizing a fundraising campaign to establish a scholarship in his name. Dean Barber taught at Myers Park High School from the 1960s to 1980s.

Without a doubt, his creative influence on his students was significant. One very visible sign of his success was the fact that -- year in and year out -- his students won awards and accolades in local, state and national art competitions. Of course, several of his students won scholarships to some of the finest art colleges and institutions in the country, including the Pratt Institute, Columbus College of Art and Design, and Savannah College of Art and Design to name a few. In turn, numerous students later chose careers in the arts or in arts-related fields, such as architecture, graphic arts, painting, pottery, illustration and the like.

A testament to Mr. Barber's impact is that nearly twenty years after he stopped teaching at MPHS, the artwork of his students is still displayed at MPHS. And yet, while a tribute for Mr. Barber was organized for him in the late 1980s, no scholarship was established in his name. More information regarding that tribute can at the link on this website. By establishing a scholarship in his name, this campaign will not only pay tribute to his excellent work as a teacher, but will continue that legacy in the future.
