Art Auction FAQ's!
Frequently Asked Questions about the Online Art Auction.

Who is organizing the art auction and is the organization a bona fide 501(c)3 non-profit institution?
Education Works is sponsoring the fundraiser, including the online auction, to raise money for a scholarship in the name of Dean Barber. A copy of its letter of determination from the IRS is at www.barberfundraiser.org. A copy can also be viewed on Guidestar’s website.

Will the organizer set a minimum bid for the artwork, below which it will not be sold?
The minimum sales price for any artwork will be mutually agreed upon with each artist.

Will the item be returned to the artist if it does not sell?
The artist in most cases will retain control of the artwork until it is purchased online. However, if the artist does donate the artwork to the fundraiser and the artwork does not sell at the auction, then attempts will be made to sell the artwork through other avenues.

Will the items donated for sale be insured at all times while in the possession of the organization until it is claimed by the new owner?
Again, the fundraiser does not anticipate having possession of the artwork prior to the sale of the artwork online so insurance for the artwork will not be needed. In the event that the fundraiser does retain possession of the artwork prior to sale, then the appropriate insurance will be procured.

What forms of publicity/promotion will the organization be responsible for in helping to increase exposure for the event and the artist in particular?
The fundraiser will use a press release, a brochure of the artwork as well as an email/letter campaign to spread the word about the auction.

Will the organizer double-check the spelling of your name in printed material before going to press? Will they print the title and medium correctly?
Yes. The fundraiser will allow the artist the opportunity to review any press releases or brochures before publicizing them.

What percentage of the gross sales from the auction will directly benefit the charity?
Mission Fish charges a transaction fee for any online sales. Those fees are more fully described at www.missionfish.org. Beyond the transaction fee, the rest of the amount of the purchase price goes to establish the memorial scholarship. The fundraiser does not use scholarship funds to cover operating costs.

What is the audience for the auction event?
How many people will attend and who are they likely to be? What is the ticket price for the general public to attend? The audience of buyers are former Barber students, graduates of Myers Park High School and art patrons. Further, Ebay/Mission Fish have a worldwide audience.

Will there be appropriate follow-up recognition and correspondence after the event?
Artists will be notified after the event of the sale price of the work, the purchaser and the purchaser's address and phone number. Artists will be thanked for their contribution and given a summary of the event within 60 days.

Does the organizer understand IRS regulations relevant to auctions?
The fundraiser cannot advise an artist or buyer about the deductibility of a specific piece of artwork. An accountant or tax lawyer should be consulted. However, in general, if the artwork is purchased substantially over its market value, the amount of purchase over the market value may be considered a contribution. See IRS Publication 526 at the following link: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf.

How are shipping arrangements for the artwork made?
The fundraiser will coordinate the shipping of the artwork with the artist, including the handling of any shipping and insurance costs.

How will questions about the artwork be handled during the auction?
The fundraiser will request that the artists be generally available to answer questions about the artwork that may arise during the auction.

Does the artwork include framing?
No. Unless framing is indicated with the artwork, then it does not include framing.
