Making a Difference: MPHS Graduates Organize Fundraiser For Memorial Scholarship in Name of Dean Barber, Art Teacher

BODY:

There will be an online art auction to raise money to establish money for a Memorial Scholarship in the name of Dean Barber, a teacher at Myers Park High School. The auction will be held on Ebay’s Mission Fish. The fundraiser will be held on the weekend of May 3, 2008. All of the proceeds raised from the auction will go towards establishing a memorial scholarship. The operating costs of the fundraiser are funded separated.

The attached brochure shows the artwork to be auctioned. The following artists generously donated their artwork for the auction: Paul Rousso, Hope Braswell, Miles Lewis and Kent Lineberger. Another online auction will be held later on in which the following artists have pledged artwork to be auctioned: Mark Peters, Stephanie Chesson, Jim McGuire and Gina Gilmour.

“It is only fitting that this fundraiser pays tribute to an outstanding teacher at Myers Park High School – Dean Barber – who inspired so many students,” Randy Farmer, an organizer of the fundraiser and graduate from Myers Park High School in 1983. This fundraiser also reflects the many ways in which a great teacher, such as Mr. Barber, can influence a student’s life.”

To honor Mr. Barber’s legacy, Education Works, Inc. was organized to sponsor the fundraiser. The money will be raised for a scholarship to be given annually to a Myers Park High School graduate. The scholarship will be awarded based on the candidate's achievements in the visual arts, overall academic achievement and commitment to public service. The fundraiser, started in December, 2006, has a campaign goal of $10,000.00. To date, the fundraiser has raised about $2,500.00.

Education Works is a 501(c)(3) non profit corporation and is an all-volunteer organization. More information about organization can be found at www.barberfundraiser.org.
