View Residence

Seattle, Washington
Robert Edson Swain, AIA
Principal Architect

Carter Woollen
Managing Architect

Situated on the western facing slopes of Seattle with views to the Puget Sound, this project was conceived as a guest house to be used by it's owners for out of town guests, as an exercise and office outbuilding to their existing house, and as a getaway.

The small size of the existing lot suggested that building into the slope against the alley, to open up three stories to the view out to the Puget Sound. Large bay windows bring light into the double height living space, while trellises surround the balconies which open out to the garden, allowing for the capture of summer breezes.

Water is a consistent theme through the building, brough down with rain chains into ancient chinese troughs located in the landscape.
